From tension of beauty and despair, we find ourselves at a point of emergence.

Katherine Sandoz and Betsy Cain lead us to the wilderness; a green world, a feminine world. The space suggests a hortus conclusus, an enclosed garden – a paradox as nature cannot be contained. With abstraction as its agent and exploration of earth-based forms, the installation invites viewers to contemplate passage to a place of rebirth, regeneration, and healing.

Sandoz presents layered vistas augmenting our understanding of our shared wild and its wilderness through abstraction and deconstruction, through woven color and texture. Her immersive works are sparked by a spiritual state of wonder, and ask us to recognize the complex design and sustainability that nature’s example provides us. Cain’s primordial forms call on the old and new gods. Her feminine, serpentine cutouts contain the boundless and ungovernable. Light, shadow, color subtleties, and a distinct sense of place comprise a visual vocabulary shared in both artists’ multi-disciplinary works.

Borne from a world marked by unrest, this selection speaks to a universal and timeless spirituality. With these alternate depictions of nature, the installation offers a model for consideration.

This space creates a refuge that allows for reflection and transformation.
